Support Your Immune System

Boosting your immune system is a two-step process: ridding your body of toxins and eating right to fortify yourself. As we all know, chronic disease rates are rising outrageously. We’re all getting fatter and sicker by the week, it seems. Why? A #1 reason is toxicity. We are breathing pesticides, formaldehyde (from fresh paint, carpet cleaning, varnish, etc.,) exhaust fumes, and eating or drinking, ingesting hormones, mercury (from our fillings) lead and other heavy metals.

But doesn’t this all get eliminated along with food and water and breath? No, it doesn’t. What it does instead is get itself parked inside cells and between them, blocking good nutrition, good elimination and a good Immune System – which ultimately becomes exhausted from dealing with so much junk. And, then what happens?  Arthritis, Allergies, Cancers, Chronic Fatigue and all those nasty, life-diminishing infirmities.

Eat and Drink Well

At the same time you are Detoxing, begin eating right—defensive eating-- to fortify your health. At Rio Caliente, you’ll find our buffet table filled with delicious fresh fruits and low starch vegetables high in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins. Garlic, like green tea, has immune-enhancing effects. It is recommended that you eat a clove of fresh garlic a day—raw or slightly cooked. On the evening buffet table you'll find sesame salt. It will give a boost to your immune system while enhancing the flavor of your food.

As reported in the September 8, 2003 Health Sciences Institute Newsletter (http://www.hsibaltimore.com/hsiindex.shtml), results from a study at the University of Athens involving nearly 2000 subjects give further evidence of the great benefit of fruits and vegetables in the diet. Those whose diets included the highest fruit intake had more than 70 percent reduced risk of heart attack and other cardiac problems compared with those who ate the least amount of fruit. Subjects that consumed vegetables three or more times each week had approximately 70 percent lower risk than those who ate no vegetables at all. The lead author simplified results for the layman, saying that for every additional piece of fruit consumed each day, subjects showed a 10 percent reduction in coronary risk.

Drinking at least 6 glasses of our purified, high alkaline water a day will also help wash out the toxins. You can begin your day with the juice of ¼ a lime squeezed into a cup of warm water prior to drinking your tea or coffee. This will help cleanse your liver. To further raise your interferon level, you can substitute green tea for some, if not all of the coffee you normally drink.

Water:
* only 1% of the earth’s water is drinkable;
* we each use about 100 gallons daily at home (15-25 gallons for a 5 minute shower);
* almost 80 tons of chlorine are put in U.S and Canadian water supplies each year; and
* industries dumped 197 million pounds of toxic chemicals in waterways in 1990 alone.

But our bodies need it:
* two-thirds of the body is water, so we need 10 glasses a day to maintain health;
* 75% of us are chronically dehydrated despite the fact that even mild dehydration slows down the metabolism, triggering fuzzy short term memory and fatigue;
* drinking 5 glasses of water a day can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79% and bladder cancer by 50%, according to the American Water
Works Association (www.awwa.org).

PINEAPPLE TEA (helps to cleanse the kidneys)

Ingredients for 1 quart of tea

1 large pineapple
6 pints of water

Directions
* Remove the leaves and wash the pineapple well.
* Peel the pineapple and set aside the fruit (not
used in this recipe!)
* Place the peel in 6 pints of water and bring to a boil
* Boil until it reduces to 1 quart.
* Strain the liquid and discard the peel. Refrigerate
the resulting pineapple tea.

It's ready to serve!
