Doing or Being

Spa activities allow guests to set their own level of activity for the kind of renewal they need. Guests can choose from activities as dynamic as hiking, horseback riding, yoga, swimming and water exercise, or as serene as a massage, a mud wrap, a soak in the pool or just sitting in the sun with a good book.

Evening cultural programs presented by experts in a variety of fields offer opportunities for education as well as diversion for guests (see Programs Calendar).

Eco-Exploring

Rio Caliente is surrounded and sheltered by the Sierra La Primavera, part of a magnificent belt of long extinct volcanic mountains. From deep underground comes the hot river, cradling Rio Caliente in a wide horseshoe. You can explore the varied ecology of the region -- over 100 varieties of birds (see Bird page) including the exotic Motmot, Orioles, the Squirrel-Tailed Cuckoo and Hummingbirds and plants including Montezuma Pine, tropical Palm and Bougainvillea. The local geological deposits of Rio Caliente tell the story of numerous volcanic eruptions -- deposits of ash flow, pumice, obsidian and caldera-lake sediments reveal the dramatic events which gave shape to Rio Caliente.

At Rio Caliente, hikers have countless trails to explore, some much more demanding than others. From the high ridges, the vistas are spectacular. Equally interesting are the hikes along the river to its sources. Hikes generally vary in length from 1 hour to 3-1/2 hours as well as in degree of difficulty. It is no wonder that guided hiking is a favorite activity of Rio Caliente guests!

Sightseeing and Shopping

Some of the best shopping and most fascinating spots in Mexico are within an hour of Rio Caliente. The spa's SUVs regularly take guests to the suburb of Tlaquepaque, whose baroque mansions now showcase the ceramics, glass, metal work, and furniture made here and to Guadalajara itself, with its museums, market and famed Orozco murals. Teuchitlan, the center of an ancient civilization and site of circular pyramids and a glorious lake, the village of Tequila, where Mexico's national beverage is made, and the tiny colonial town of Magdalena are very popular countryside excursions.

Rio Caliente Hot Springs Spa

"Rio Caliente is like no other spa I've ever seen. The 50-room ranch is actually more like a retreat than a spa, a loose funky place to relax and recharge."
