CALIENTE: A Classic Spa
Historically,
many cultures have acknowledged the benefits of taking an annual
rest at a healing place. In modern days, the spa holiday has grown
to include pampering, weight loss, aerobic exercises, jacuzzis,
etc. in largely artificial settings using high-tech machinery, chlorinated
water and calorie counts.
Rio Caliente
is one of the few spas that offers a regenerative holiday - reuniting
the guests with all that's natural, from primeval volcanic hot springs
through fresh food and energy-building exercise, to simple resting
- all at their own discretion.

This forgotten art is indispensable to health and one of Rio Caliente's
most subtle and powerful gifts. Pushing ourselves to keep up with today's
hectic pace causes damage to the immune and other body systems. So Rio Caliente
has a very low-key style - no dressing up, makeup, jewelry or ties - and
an uncomplicated, unpretentious atmosphere.
Taking the Waters
| Older cultures
believe in the efficacy of "taking the waters". At Rio
Caliente, the source of the healing waters is an underground volcanic
lake. It supplies numerous springs and waterfalls along the river
that bounds three sides of the spa. The waters rise at temperatures
as high as 157° Fahrenheit and have been tapped to provide pure
thermal waters for the spa's four pools, natural steam room and
all the bedrooms. Their mineral content is a particularly beneficial (and odorless) combination of salts and minerals, including lithium, while their alkalinity is highly beneficial to health in general. |

Our Guests
Women forego
makeup, men leave their ties at home, and most people wear comfortable
weekend wear. The spa's easy atmosphere has an appeal that transcends
age and occupation and makes for fascinating conversations. This conviviality
makes Rio Caliente an ideal place for solo vacationers. If you'd rather
be alone with your thoughts (or a good book), however, your privacy will
be respected. Couples, too, find Rio Caliente a great getaway. Many of
the guest rooms, grouped in small cottages on the hillside, have their
own terraces and privacy.
RIO CALIENTE received a
2004 Readers
Choice Award
in the category of Best Mineral Springs Spa
from Spa Finder Magazine.

"One quickly discovers at
Rio Caliente that the soul and spirit
are nurtured along with the physical self."

AGE JOURNAL

"What I found most interesting
were the guests
- most of whom were returning visitors or referred by past guests.
The characteristic of the clientele I believe goes a long way
in establishing the appealing atmosphere that transcended age and occupation.
It allowed a diverse group of people to have some great conversations
- and respect for those who just wanted their privacy."
